Kevin touched on a key point, mentioning that the relationship between the parks and the public is difficult and troubled. They learned, through hard experience, that the key is to learn what you need, as opposed to what you want. That message needs to be adopted by the public, and hard wired into management, but we seem to be headed in the opposite direction, constantly working to make access everywhere easier and more comfortable and care-free for everyone, promoting the parks as places to bring all your toys from home, or your actual travelling home. Kevin and Pete had mentors who helped them learn the lessons of the canyon. All of us who love the canyon need to pass that message on.

Just finished the book am covered with Pete's and Kevin's blisters, bruises, and cactus spines. Seems as though I traveled along with more than reading having stood on the South Rim so many times and felt the "diminishment and expansion" its presence. On seeing it for the first time, my daughter quietly said "My soul fits into this place." Kevin's book is a testament to the sacredness of the mountain laying down on its side with beautifully expressive prose and cheeky wit. Thank you for the gift!

Having hiked the canyon a handful of times (including a couple 'bushwhacks' off the north rim) I can highly recommend this read. My hiking buds are passing this book around...and singing it's praises. Thanks to Kevin & Pete for giving us their experiences (albeit vicariously, thank God)
